I am often asked about the science behind amber teething necklaces. Parents also want to know if there are any side effects to wearing amber for long periods of time.

Unlike teething gels, powders or pain relief syrups, the traditional beaded amber necklaces imported from the Baltic region are a non-invasive and side-effect free remedy for the pain and complications of teething, such as lack of appetite, upset tummies, ear ache, fevers and colds.

A natural analgesic, amber will help calm a baby without resorting to drugs.

Amber is a resin, not a stone. It is therefore warm to the touch, as well as very comfortable and light to wear.

Scientific investigation into the therapeutic effects of amber is ongoing.

Currently, there are two different theories that attempt to explain how wearing amber on the skin can have a soothing and calming effect on teething babies and toddlers.

One theory suggests that when amber is worn on the skin, the skin's warmth releases miniscule amounts of healing oils from the amber which are then absorbed via the skin into the bloodstream.

Amber's anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are also recognized by allopathic medicine. In Austria, Switzerland and Germany, you will find amber teething necklaces sold in local pharmacies. Pharmacists and doctors have long known about the healing properties of amber which include calmative, analgesic, antispasmodic, expectorant, and febrifuge (anti-fever) functions.

A second theory is based on scientific findings which have shown that amber is electromagnetically alive and therefore charged with a significant amount of organic energy. Its special attribute is the fact that it is electronegative. Wearing amber produces negative ionisation on the skin's surface. This, in turn, has a positive influence on the human body. The negative ions assist in the in the prevention of illness. These health-promoting effects apply to babies, children and adults alike.

It is possible that the soothing and calming effect of amber teething necklaces, which has been empirically observed, is based on a combination of the factors listed above.

Many of us are making a decision to take charge of our health. What better time than the New Year to start a good health program?

There are many people with many personal reasons for making a decision to be healthy. The reasons may vary from weight loss to regain health or more energy. No matter what your reason, where do you start?

We all know that with anything, it's a good idea to start with a "clean slate." This is also true with our health. Rebuilding good health, weight loss or merely enhanced health will come easier when internal waste and toxins are out of the way. So starting with a cleanse or a colon cleanse is suitable for many people.

Cleansing gives you a fresh start, enhances energy, allows your body to better absorb nutrients needed for energy and healing and may even give you that extra motivation you need to stay on a long-term path to better health!

There are literally hundreds of cleansing programs to choose from. So how do you know which one is right for you? We all have this decision to make when we start a new program, so here are three pointers to help you make an informed decision:

  1. Be sure there is a fiber supplement either in the mix or to take with the program. The fiber, such as psyllium, is the part that will soften old, built up waste and get it ready for removal.
  2. Try to avoid laxatives. Some people feel they need them in order to help remove the older waste. This may be true. But if you use a laxative (even a natural laxative like senna) keep in mind that it can be easily addictive. Use with caution and wean off of it as opposed to stopping cold turkey once you are finished with the program.
  3. Alter your diet. No cleansing program will work if you are replacing the waste you are removing with junk food that will easily build up. Also, don't "pig out" right before your cleanse. This just means the first day or two of your cleanse will be clearing out the last day or two of over-indulgence.

No matter which program you choose, don't try to do it all at once. For example - fasting is not a good idea unless you are ready. If it took years to build up waste, it will take some time to eliminate. Keep in mind that good health habits take time and regaining or taking charge of your health is a process and a path. Be kind to yourself, know that you're body may be stronger than you think and practice makes perfect. Good luck and good health!

The National Cholesterol Education Program of the National Institutes of Health for people who have a high cholesterol level has recommended the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes diet also known as the TLC diet. This TLC diet is highly recommended to those with high cholesterol, heart disease or significant risk factors of heart disease. The premise is pretty simple you lower your cholesterol you reduce your risk of heart disease by simple limiting the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol in your diet. It is not only necessary but its also healthy. You will feel a lot lighter and younger by removing all those fats from your normal diet.

Guidelines

In order to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, the TLC diet helps by allowing just enough calories. To determine the right number of daily calories, you should work with your doctor or a registered dietitian. These general guidelines should help you plan your meals correctly:

Fats Limit your saturated fat intake to less than 7 percent of your total daily calories. Remember that up to 25 to 35 percent of your total daily calories can come from fat. Depending on how many calories you are allowed per each day, the specific amount of fat may vary.

Cholesterol The amount of cholesterol intake should be limited to less than 200 milligrams per each day

Sodium The daily sodium intake should be limited to less than 2.400 milligrams daily or even less if you have high blood pressure.

Exercising

Physical activity is very important, as important as what you eat. Lowering your low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL or the bad cholesterol), boosting high-density lipoprotein (HDL or the good cholesterol) and maintaining a healthy weight can all be done through regular exercise. Begin a regular exercising program with your doctors OK. Join an exercise class, try a brisk daily walk or even swim laps if you would like.

Differences

The differences between the TLC diet and other heart-healthy diets are not that many. The principles are much the same, but when it comes to the TLC diet, the saturated fats and cholesterol intake is much more restricted than other diets that intend to promote heart health. Even though it seems that the TLC diet is recommended to everyone, it is actually designed for those of you that have high cholesterol, heart disease or significant risk factors for heart disease.
